The original object is sized as 16.6 cm in length, 5.9 cm in remaining width, and 1.2 cm in thickness. It was unearthed in the third layer of the Hemudu site in 1977 (6,500 - 6,000 years ago), and is currently in the collection of Zhejiang Provincial Museum.
The ivory object has a polished front, where incised two sharp-beaked and long-tailed birds with their bodies conjoined. The right bird is relatively larger in shape with its long neck carved with three crest feathers, and it seems to be a male. The smaller left bird has one crest feather, seeming to be a female. The two birds, raising their heads and wings, look intimately at each other. At the center of the object where two birds connect, five concentric circles are carved with a flame pattern on top, symbolizing the sunrise in the east.
Birds and the sun are both totems worshipped by the ancestors of Hemudu. The mating and breeding of the birds, in particular, represent life or fertility due to their oviparous and multiparous features. Such worships denote the earnest wishes of the Hemudu ancestors who prayed for their clans to be safe, healthy, fruitful and multiply. At the same time, it reflects other themes, including two birds nurturing the sun, good harvest, harmonious and long-lasting marriages, joy and peace.
The techniques of the work are excellent and exquisite. The lines are soft and smooth, and the composition is simple and perfect, which can be called a masterpiece of human prehistoric carving art.
