Ceramic Pig
Hemudu Culture, the Neolithic Age

The original object, 6.3 cm long and 4.5 cm tall, was unearthed in the fourth layer of the Hemudu site in 1973 (7,000 - 6,500 years ago), and is currently in the collection of Zhejiang Provincial Museum.

The pig is very vivid and realistic. Made with charcoal-tempered black pottery, the pig is in the form of running with longer and slightly upturned snout, straight spine, bloated and sagging abdomen , and short and sturdy legs. It is between a wild boar and a modern domestic pig.

In prehistory, the pig was once regarded as a sacred animal for rain praying, and later became a symbol of wealth, power and status.
